Cannabis Cooking Basics: How to Make Edibles at Home

By Quality Control DispensaryBrooklyn & Staten Island, NY

Making cannabis edibles at home starts with one essential step that most beginners skip: decarboxylation. Raw cannabis flower contains THCA, which is non-psychoactive. To convert THCA into THC (the compound that gets you high), you need to apply heat at a specific temperature for a specific duration. This process, called decarboxylation or 'decarbing,' is what makes the difference between a potent edible and an expensive garnish.

What You Need to Know

To decarb, preheat your oven to 240°F (115°C). Break your flower into small pieces (don't grind it fine) and spread it on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 35-40 minutes until it turns from green to light golden-brown. Once decarbed, infuse the cannabis into a fat (butter, coconut oil, or olive oil) by simmering on low heat (160-180°F) for 2-3 hours. Strain through cheesecloth. This cannabutter or canna-oil can then be used in any recipe that calls for butter or oil. For dosing, calculate total THC in your starting material, divide by the number of servings, and adjust to target 5-10mg per serving for beginners.
