A bong (water pipe) filters cannabis smoke through water before you inhale it, producing a cooler, smoother hit than pipes or joints. While bongs look intimidating to first-time users, the basic operation is straightforward: pack the bowl, light it, inhale through the mouthpiece, and clear the chamber. The water filtration removes some particulate matter and cools the smoke, reducing throat irritation.
What You Need to Know
Start by filling the bong with enough water to submerge the downstem opening by about 1 inch. Too much water and you'll get splashback; too little and you lose the filtration benefit. Grind your flower to a medium consistency and pack the bowl loosely — tight packing restricts airflow. Hold a flame to the edge of the bowl (not the center) while inhaling gently through the mouthpiece. Once the chamber fills with smoke, remove the bowl and inhale the remaining smoke. Start with small hits — bongs deliver more smoke per hit than joints or pipes, so the effects can be more intense.
